2009 BFA Graduation Fashion Show

April 29, 2009

For the Show, there was one collection which I was impressed, and the garments really caught my eyes while I was little out my attention on the show.

The designers were Natalia Carorina (BFA Fashion Design) and Samantha Cisneros (BFA Textile Design). Their collaboration I liked was the design of silhouette and colors. To use an asymmetrical and loose of a body shape design, and go with geometric patterns and bold colors together. Their work is vivid and brilliant.

  • First: I would say this show was “fancy and shine” as my first impression. It was like a group of tall, slender, and beautiful women going to a prom or nightclub wearing with these luxurious and luminous evening gowns or cocktail dresses.

  • Color palette: sophiscated black, silver,  gold, red, soft pink, and a various of tender pastels tones.

  • Shapes and silhouettes: Slender and body-skimming evening gowns with metallic sequins, Swarovski crystals, large bows, ruffles, and use of fur and collars paired with a classic or night suiting.

  • What I liked: I liked the use of metallic materials: sequins and Swarovski crystals. They gave a garment with a good vibe and a glimmer of happiness and enjoyment to everybody.

  • What I disliked: with the fur materials, I am an animal lover, so if someone uses the real fur from no matter where the material came from legally or not. I will give a negative credit to it.

2009 Fall RTW:Y-3

  • First: It was all about dark and black at first impression. With menswear-y-mix and sports style, Y-3 stayed collaboration with Adidas and showed a youthful and clean cut design.

  • Color palette: Black, white, bright red, and a mute color palette.

  • Shapes and silhouettes: with sharp jackets, military coats, it was all about athletic wear and military inspired shapes.

  • What I liked: I liked the simple cut design. Although there were not many details on garments, it still showed the sense of a style and chic look.

  • What I disliked: Some pieces of garments were just like “going picnic outfit”. Maybe I am not a fan with a sports wear style; this does not work out for me.

2009 Fall RTW: Jill Stuart

  • First: Jill Stuart represented a mix style and inspired by the iconic women of music. Playing a combination with a romanticism and rock world, Jill Stuart still worked out with her signature look with ruffle, chiffon layers, and fringe.

  • Color palette: Black and ivory is the key within the collection.

  • Shapes and silhouettes: the mix of hard and soft, and it was a black leather skinny pants with a lace bloused-sleeve top by giving a dark and naughty look; a bad girl.

  • What I liked: I liked the lace and leather to make a combination matching. Lace gave a soft and feminine character, but leather was hard and stiff. Putting them together, it really showed the couple hardness with softness of a mix style.

  • What I disliked: personally, it was little boring of seeing almost black colors at the show. I knew that it was the designer’s idea and concept, but I think we need more colors since the society is under the depression.

  • First impression: At Friday night show, 15 graduate students from Academy of Art, by giving a success 2009 Fall RTWcollection to the New York’s crowd. Collaboration with Britex Fabrics San Francisco shows a voluminous looks and a smooth Fashion and Textile design. Emily Melville (Fashion Design) and Ivanka Georgieva (Textile Design) impressed me from her nine looks with a soft expression.

  • Color palette: A soft color palette in putty and creams hues.

  • Shapes and silhouettes: One piece of dresses with a belt tied plus an A-line shape, and combines wide, boxy, and voluminous printed wool coats to the garments.

  • What I liked: I really liked the color palette, the putty and cream hues made the garments with an elegant looking. I also liked those printed on garments because it showed an exquisite detail to give a life on coats without being heavy and boring.

  • What I disliked: With make up, I did not enjoy that they were using warm color to match those garments. Maybe they wanted to go a contrast tone, but I felt there was a little bit lack of balance and harmony tones.

  • Overall critique: I enjoyed that collection. As a team, their collaboration was balanced and consistent. No one was over other’s shine.

  • Proud: I have to say…I am proud of them. It is because not only I am from AAU, but also more they have done with a hard working, and finally they get a huge step into the dream stage. They deserve it!

  • Wish: I wish someday will see AAU fashion collection soon at Style.com
